Wow, you are such a girl I can't believe you don't know this. First off driving stick-shift is strictly a guy thing, so I would not caution you to try it. However, if you are the rebellious type and need to do what men do to fill some inner void then here is the answer to your question. At a stop you maintain the car in neutral when you are ready to go you shift to the first gear. As you are in first gear you listen to the car's engine, when it begins to making a wurring sound you shift into second. When you are in second and as you pick up speed you will hear another wurring sound and then you will know it is time to shift into third. You listen until you get to the fourth gear or fifth if you are on the freeway. Because women do not listen, women are incapable of shifting so I would not caution you to try it.
To reverse you shift all the way to the right and down, this will place the car in reverse. To move forward you shift into first then you move forward.

The best way to practice driving a standard transmission is to get out and actually drive. First note the pattern of the gears, where first, second, third, etc all the way up to five (6 or 7 if you have a REALLY NICE European car). Note where 'R' is as well. I assume you know how to start the car, so I won't waste time and insult you by explaining (like some people who answered). the key is to LISTEN to the engine and read your Tachometer... don't worry, it takes practice. You still need to pay attention to traffic and pedestrians as well, so it can be a lot all at once. To shift, simply let up on the accelerator (unless you are robbing a bank) and press in on the clutch with your left foot. Prompty shift between 1 and 2 release the clutch and press on the accelerator. Repeat until you reach the desired speed you wish to go.
To get into reverse.... be certain your car is completely stopped, you risk damaging the drive train if you are rolling, press the clutch and move the shifter into the 'R' position. Some models may have a collar around the shifter that you need to pull up while shifting into reverse. Again, slowly let out the clutch and apply gentle pressure to the accelerator and move in reverse. To go forward again, come to a complete stop and press in the clutch shift out of 'R' and into 1, next slowly let out the clutch and apply the accelerator.
If you can, try to go to a large UNCROWDED parking lot and drive away from other cars with a licensed driver.... a back road that isn't busy is also a good place to practice. I on the other hand was tossed behind the wheel and made to drive an old Mazda pick up truck about 75 miles while at work... so I figured it out fast. Its amazing what you can do when you haven't got a choice!! LOL
I hope I explained everything clearly and accurately for you. You'll get the hang of it, keep practicing!!!

I think you may need some more practice....:) no insult intended. IWhen i drive a standard car i can just tell by the sound of the motor when i need to shift up...and shifting down is not as hard because naturally if your slowing down you have too. Im not sure what you mean about the reverse thing. Once you have backed up just push in the clutch and shift into first and go. I hope this helps its not easy to explain in words as it would be just showing someone. Good Luck

I wish I could give you lessons, but the best I can do is give you some advice.
First learn your gears, don't just think you know them, know that you know them. Next, practice getting the clutch and the gas peddle to work together. When driving listen to the engine, when it seems the engine is starting to race and your not moving any faster, it is now time to shift. Take things slowly........Please..
This tape is by no means good, but listen to when he shifts and it will give you an idea. Good Luck!!

when your tachometer gets up toward the redline(where the engine shouldnt go thats when u push in the clutch and shift into the next gear) but dont allways push it to the red line because it could mess up the engine. u shift into reverse and move the clutch and the gas the same as forward gears, then you shift into first let out the clutch slowly and give it gas

So, what are you, about 12 or 13? Planning on taking daddy's Miata out for a spin when him and mom go to the movies some night? I can't believe the idiots who are actually giving you legitimate answers. If you REALLY have a car with a stick and don't know how to drive it, then find or hire someone who knows how to teach you.
