I did for a couple of months. I got into a bit of financial hole because the company where I worked was purchased by a large corporation and hours were immediately cut. Big Time.
I got a better job.
For those who are down on those accepting assistance;
I fully agree that this should not be a way of life.
There is a class known as the working poor in this country. These are people who work , probably full time, but the job does not pay a living wage. Degrees and certificates don't always guarantee employment either. If you happen to live in a more depressed area of the country, jobs can be few and far between. Sometimes you have to take what you can get until you find better.
So I'm sorry (not really), but I feel that those who "hate on" folks for receiving assistance probably haven't ever known hard times.
By the way, I pay for foodstamps right along with everyone else, so I just can't muster guilt for using something that I had and will continue to pay for.

No I don't, but I have considered signing up. I'm going to school and cannot work full time with my course load. My husband is trying to struggle through a tough Michigan economy with a small business that's barely hanging in there. For us, it would only be a temporary measure as I'm in my last year of college. If I went to work full time, it would take me several more years to get through school, and I work at a low-paying job.
I don't have the source for this, but in 70% of the cases, most people are only welfare or food stamps for less than 3 years. Because most of the people are like our family, going through a tough time and need some help until we can get back on our feet.
However, I am seriously thinking about getting Mi-Child. I can't afford the medical insurance premiums for the stand-alone policy we had ((over $600 every two months) on top of all the other bills. At least that way, my kids could have insurance. My daughter has never even been to a dentist because we just cannot afford it.
Just in case anyone wonders, we have internet mainly for my schooling, and we gave up cable TV in order to have the internet.

No, and thank god I don't have to and never will. That sucks!
John K, what about all the other people on welfare and foodstamps? Not everyone is lucky in life, and hopefully, you won't have to resort to depending on them. BTW, you seem really stupid.

No I collect pre-world war 2 canceled US postage stamps postmarked as being mailed from each of the European countries that existed then. I think they make a better collection.
