I have a 1988 Chevy Celebrity with 2.8L Fuel-Injected V6 with auto tranny, I have checked the fluid level and it is fine. When coming out of 1st into 2nd gear and turning the wheel to the right the transmission whines pretty bad. Sometimes I get roughshifting when it is hot. Is the tranny going out?

This is really kind of a funny question.I have been at the race track a couple of times in my day and I don't think I can ever recall a transmission whine that I could hear.True race cars run open headers and if you can hear a transmission whine through the roar of the engine you need to become a super snoop with that good of hearing .Most of the time the whine you hear is the supercharger or the turbo kickin in.The gears in the tranny do whine but I'll be darned if I can hear it over the motor.

turning your wheel either direction will not have any effect on transmission. if the whine is only when you turn it is the power steering pump. as for the rest, have you ever changed your tranny filter?? local shop should be able to do it for around 50.00, depending on price of filter. labor is 1/2 hour.

it sounds like it needs the fluid and filter changed on it,,it may be starving for fluid at that point,,and the whine you hear is the front pump,,id have it checked by a mechanic to be sure ,,he will be able to tell you more than i can after he drives it,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.

Are you sure it is not a belt wining from moisture? Does it happen upon initial start up? cold engine? May need to look at that.

If it's when you turn it could be the power steering fluid...or the rack and pinion steering making the noise.

sounds like you need to change the oil and filter and also check the modulator valve, but i would guess its the filter is dirty.good luck.
