it takes a lot to overcome such a fear. I know because I'm over 50 and still am afraid of the dark'tho to a lesser degree than when I was younger). Try something like watching tv with all of the lights off just for a short time. Gradually increase the time periods. BTW, is this only when you're alone or while someone is with you also? Try letting your kids have a tiny nightlight in their bedroom for awhile. This might allay some of their fears. My problem started when I was just a little kid. So hang in there!

There's nothing to be afraid of... Maybe it is just your imagination... & I don't think it is genetic... Eventhough you've never told your kids that you are afraid of the dark, maybe they somehow found out about it... The way you react when there's a blackout at your place, or maybe some1 scared them off with some ghost stories, etc...
My BF doesn't like being in the dark... He feels as if he can't breath... Claustrophobic or something... So he will sleep with the lights on... LOL.... (^_^)

Well I know I have a terrible fear of the dark so in psychology class I researched it. It can be caused by too many scary stories, games, and /or movies. It can also be caused by a trauma caused in or around the dark. There are some therapies for it but I'm sure you can use the tips from worldwise1 to be able to help your fears.

If it was daylight One would say possible schizophrenia symptom,
as its dark, it could well be just plain and simple fear of what you can't see, this maybe lack of self confidence ,sense of inadequacy, many causes, children pick up things very quickly even from body language, try lowering lights a bit at a time(by a dimmer if you have to) over 5 nights , this may help you see that there is no lurking things in the room ...just you and only you ....
Did you ever have any bad childhood stuff go down ...relating to similar events...locked in rooms etc...frighting movie perhaps

This is fear of the unknown. You close the door and it's dark and things take on new form and when you turn on the lights you know exactly what it is.
This is not genetic, it's a learned behavior. You are teaching your children to have an irrational fear of the dark.
Hope you figure it out!
Good LUCK!

Usually being tired has a bit to do with that. Personally I think you are tired at that time so your mind is tired and wants to dream. Get to bed sooner. Get a nightlight. Mainly remember that any noises or shadows you see are either things shifting in the house from it settling or the weather is effecting it. Remever if you think it is real you are imagining things. As far as children being afraid of the dark, that is a common problem. You be the one to reassure them that there is nothing there to fighten them.

Hmmm... I'm not sure... I'm afraid of the dark cause one time my brother shut my door when i was tryin' to go to sleep and i heard foot steps and breathing coming towards my bed and no one was in my room. I screamed and my brother ran into my room and turned the lights on.

I am afriad of the dark as well. I can get quiet panicky about it. I would try and find some good books on the subject, and work your way through the fear together with your kids. Maybe try night-time walks when there is lots of moonlight.

I was scared of the dark when i was little too. So i closed the door before i went to sleep.
Then when i'm in bed i think of what i will do tomorrow. Then i will think of happy joyful thoughts. then i close my eyes and think of a huge shopping spree. just do that and you'll go to sleep at night.
