I don't know about the salary question, but I know there's a lot of opportunities besides working in public libraries. I got to Baylor University, and we always seem to be needing more librarians. I suspect it's like that at most universities, since few people go into that field. When you think about it, there are libraries everywhere, many of them huge, and libraries need a lot to keep them running. We have four large libraries just at Baylor alone, and Waco (the town where it's located) is very small, and pretty impoverished. Plus there are children's librarians, law library librarians...if you think that's a career that would be fulfilling, then I would go for it. Don't go into some other field (business, medicine, whatever) just because everyone else is, because people who are passionate about their careers are more likely to do better in their fields--employers can sense that when they interview a potential employee, and they respond positively to that. And congrats on having the initiative to go back to school! Have fun on the journey.

A teacher that I eat lunch with has been talking about her husband's degree in library studies. He is very excited about it and wants very much to do this.
Besides working in a public library you can also work in a school library. There are many avenues within the library that you can take. As you study it you will find other interests in this field.
The salary really varies from city to city and state to state and also with the type of work that you will do and the amount of experience that you have.
I think that it is a great degree that offers not too much stress and a decent pay.

I work in a library and I have talked with several librarians. They have told me that a degree in their field is only good there. Their salary isn't exactly the greatest but they do it because it is something they love. The best thing to do would be to go to your local library and speak to someone. They will probably be able to give you the best insight.

You can work as a librarian in the corporate world as well. For example, there are law libraries. Corporations often have internal libraries. I don't know what the salary maximum is, but here's a link to a LIS program near me that might have some good info for you.

I'm a pre-law major and not too sure about the degree in library and information technician studies major. but outside of public libraries, i think you can get a good job on capital hill or even overseas in like the library in Cairo....both jobs would be amazing, at least in my opinion....If not, you can always work for me when I'm a big lawyer :)
