I asked a similar question once before, but without any details so a lot of people didn't understand what I was getting at. I don't think this because I'm a guy and a smoker so I obviously don't think of myself as a dumb jerk. But sometimes I get the impression there's a lot of hate directed at smokers. I started 10 years ago when I was 14, and then sometime in college I realized I was addicted (I tried to quit and just got really sick). But I'm a nice guy and I know some things about some things, so I don't understand where the stereotype came from.

Although I don't decide whether I like a person based on whether they smoke or not, there are some things that can make me lose respect for people that smoke. I think smokers that inflict their habit onto others who don't smoke are extremely rude and inconsiderate e.g. people who smoke with their children in the car - that is disgusting. And butt-litter is quite a big problem here in Australia, especially on the beaches. Young people who take up smoking and continue to smoke are making a dumb choice considering all the education out there about how bad it is for you. I do have sympathy for the older generation who got addicted before it was common knowledge that smoking can kill you, though. So although I think it's wrong to assume that someone is a jerk or an idiot just because they smoke, there are the occasional bad ones who do smoke in non-smoking places and drop butts everywhere, they're the ones creating the stereotype.

it's a true addiction. it's very hard to quit. been there, done that. started when i was 12, then finally kicked it when i was 33. it was very difficult and yes, even today, i could start up smoking again if i didn't have a granddaughter to think about and stick around for. it's enjoyable, it brings a comfort and satisfaction that those who have never smoked will NEVER understand. i get it. most of us out there that are ex-smokers don't think that people who smoke are jerks, we just hope that the smokers we know will have the strength some day soon to be able to quit all together. i will occasionally take a drag off of someone's cigarette (a person i know of course), and that's enough to hold me for the next few years. i am usually drunk or close to it when i do that btw. i believe the hatred stems from the common knowledge that smoking causes cancer and emphysema and all sorts of other bad things in your lungs, yet the smoker continues to smoke. those that "hate" are the ones who have either never smoked, or used to smoke and quit before they were actually addicted by some miracle. i would say to those that persecute you for smoking, "get a life of your own and stay out of mine!" good luck to you and i hope this helped you in some way.

You know, I never used to mind if a guy smoked because I'm a social smoker myself (meaning I only smoke maybe two or three when I'm out drinking).
But as you start getting more serious with a guy, it's just a pain in the neck when they always have to go smoke or when you kiss him and he tastes like stale smoke. Not to mention that it's such an expensive habit. A guy will complain if you buy yourself a tube of lipstick, but he's there spending three bucks a day on a pack of smokes.
So, that's my answer. Would you like it if a girl you liked smoked all the time?

I agree that there is a lot of hatred to smokers...I smoked for 6 years...hs to college and quit during college. However, I am now the biggest anti-smoker you will meet. I think it should be banned from any public place...even bars. It sucks to have to be subjected to someone elses dirty habit when you just want to go have a beer and some wings. However, I know a lot of guys who smoke and they are neither dumb nor jerks...well, most of them. But they aren't that because of the smoking.

It's a bad thing to do. The problem with smoking, unlike other drug use is that it heavily effects everyone around you right away.

Also so much fuss has been made about how horrible it is for you. So when you smoke the thought is, that you must be very ignorant. You are such a young guy and when people look at you, it's like this guy has all this information and he's still smokes... not too brite. Fear not... people think that about heavy people, people with bad dentistry, bad clothes... just about everything.

So, all you can do is quit or ignore what people think.

I hope you quit! Good LUCK!

First of all - a guy isn't a jerk because he smokes, a guy is a jerk based on how he acts or treats others. BUT basically, smoking is gross. It looks dumb, not cool. It robs the lungs of oxygen and in return, after years of smoking, you get wrinkles, harsh skin, awful breath, and lung cancer. Plus your house smells like a giant ashtray. Not cool if you ask me. YEs, I think it is dumb. Totally dumb. But that's my opinion and you guessed it- I'm a non smoker and would never have married a smoker.

I started smoking when I was 14 too. I understand why. Peer pressure etc.. I quit when I was 20 and it was kinda hard! I really got addicted in 6 years! When i see a guy who smokes I usually figure he started just like I did and didn't think he'd get addicted. It is one of those things that you just don't think will happen to you. But it does.

I would say 98% of smokers nowadays are really polite, like say when my daughter and I are at the mall sitting on a bench or something, they will either stay away from her automatically, or when I ask them to please not smoke near my child, they will immediately leave. I don't smoke, but I know ppl who do. I don't think that ppl who smoke are dumb or jerks, I just think they have a bad habit. Bad behavior would make me think someone's a jerk. Saying something dumb would make me think they're dumb.

Smokers are addicts -- I used to be one myself. And they can be jerks if they smoke around other people who are not smokers, or flick their butts on the ground, or do anything else that invades the space of nonsmokers.
