Congratulations on your raise - they're hard to come by these days!
let X = your original salary (before the raise)
plus your 5% (.05X) raise - than:
X+.05X=31500 Divide both sides by X
1+.05=31500/X Add then multiply both
sides by X
1.05X=31500 divide by 1.05
x=30000
Proof:
5% (.05) times 30000 = 1500
30000+1500=31500

30,000.
Because 1.05 x ?= 31,500.
(.05 = 5%, so multiplying something by 1.05 is the same as adding 5%.)
Divide both sides by 1.05, and you get ? = 30,000.
