A recent question here implied that putting stuffed toys in a baby's crib puts them at risk of SIDS. I'm not sure how this could happen- other than the stuffed toy might suffocate the baby. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks.

Yes, it can. Here's the explanation. As far as researchers can tell, it appears that some babies are born pre-determined to be at greater risk of SIDS. Their brain-stems don't monitor the buildup of carbon dioxide. When a normal person is asleep, if they get sheets or pillows around their face and it forms a pocket causing a buildup of CO2, the brain stem alerts the body to change position. This gives fresh air to the body and prevents problems. In a SIDS case, this doesn't happen. The baby continues to sleep as CO2 chokes out the oxygen supply and the baby continues to breathe but asphyxiates in their sleep. The pillows, extra blankets, stuffed animals, all act as agents that can get near the baby's face and cause these pockets.

You just answered your own question. Some babies move around a lot in the crib. Even if the stuffed animals are at the end a baby can scoot him/herself down and bury their face in the soft toy and suffocate.

I can see if the baby isn't able to hold up their head and the toys are rather big they may be able to suffocate. I know it could happen up to the baby is one years old. Here is a site I found that talks about SIDS I hope it helps. http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/sleep/sids.html

There is a theory that SIDS may be caused by overheating. If your child is healthy and able to roll over, they should be able to move away from anything that might impair their breathing. On the other hand, why take chances with your precious gift? You won't ever have to worry (at least not about that) and they won't develop an attachment to having to have something in bed with them.

Put a stuffed animal to your mouth and see if you can breathe. When you feel that you cannot breathe you are able to take the stuffed animal away. Your baby will not be able to do that. Also stuffed animals carry dust mites. Little ones have no immune system and this can irritate their respiratiory system.

You want things as open as possible so that there is as much air circulation as possible. Having the animals, or pillows, or anything like that, could possibly trap carbon dioxide and reduce the available oxygen supply. Yeah, they're cute, but I bet your baby is cuter. Just be safe.
