The carpet on my stairs look a little gray around the edges, and I think it's soot from a nearby train. Any suggestions for products or home-cleaning methods to get rid of it? I'm looking for alternatives to professional carpet cleaners.

Have you tried Resolve spray carpet cleaner? When my kids were young, I ALWAYS kept it on hand.

Fireplace shops sell a product that removes soot. Not sure if it works on carpet, but the label on the bottle should say.

Go to the grocery store and rent a carpet cleaner, it's cheap.

Other than that, hot water, carpet cleaner, and elbow grease (try using a semi-stiff brush)
