Im 6 weeks and was told that I should not eat spicy foods becuase they could harm they baby possibly causing blindness. This sounds a bit extreme but I wanted to be careful. Can eating spicy foods harm an unborn child?

I have never heard of not being able to eat spicy foods. For me the spicier the better. My daughter is 2 and also likes spicy foods. If it affects you by giving you heart burn you may want to avoid it? But eat what you enjoy except for the big no no's. (undercooked meat, some fishes, not too much caffine, alcohol, which Im sure you already know).

I feel your pain. I have had heartburn since I was 12 weeks, now I am 36 weeks. I wake up practically every night, several times a night because it hurts so bad, not to mention the pain I feel through out the day! And sometimes it's not just heartburn, a little throw up will come with it! My doctor told me my only options were to take maalox or tums. I take the smooth dissolve tums, they're not nearly as chalky and practically melt in my mouth. So, I keep tums everywhere. In my purse, by my bed, and in my living room. When I'm only having mild heartburn I try to drink a glass of milk and sometimes that will help a little, I actually think soda makes it worse. I am sorry you are going through this too, at least it will stop once we give birth! They say stay away from certain foods, but I swear EVERYTHING gives me heartburn!

no spicy food will not harm you or the baby. HEARTBURN on the other hand you will probably get a lot of that so avoid the spicy stuff just for your own comfort , i had a lot of heartburn because of the food i ate , i love spicy stuff.

i have had 3 kids and ate spicy food with all of them throughout my pregnancy.but each pregnancy is different and if that baby doesn't want what u eat.they will send it right back up. no matter what it is. u can eat spicy food i just wouldn't make it the main food to eat. and unless ur doctor tells u not i wouldn't worry about what other people and there old wives tales have to say. i was told so many things with 1st child i almost was scared that i wasn't breathing right. people will mean u well but u aren't them and ur pregnancy is not there so consult ur doctor. the only good reason i could suggest to avoid eating spicy food as my husband just reminded me would be on the behalf of ur husband or boyfriend because u might have bad gas afterwords.
congratulations and good luck!!!!!!!!!

It IS extreme, and untrue.

As long as it's healthy, eat what sounds good. Just make sure you're eating a well-balanced diet and you'll be fine.

As you get farther along, you might find that spicy food cause heartburn. You can take an antacid for that; ask your doctor what one to take.

If your doctor told you to avoid spicy food because it could cause blindness, find another doctor NOW.

Who on Earth told you that? It's silly and completely untrue. Spicy food won't hurt you unless you have an ulcer or are prone to heartburn, and it won't hurt your baby at all. If you're craving spicy foods, have at it!

Ask your doctor if you have concerns. Spicy foods are not harmful while pregnant. You may get heartburn or stomach upset. if it doesn't bother your stomach, than eat it.
Stay away from soft cheeses, shellfish and make sure meats are fully cooked though.

You need to eat healthier when you are pregnant and you can eat spicy foods in moderation. You can get heartburn easier and this can be uncomfortable for mom. I was never told that I could not eat spicy foods. I ate chips and salsa with my son and he loves chips and salsa!! He started eating that when he was 2 years old. Listen to your body. For example, with my other son I could not eat that stuff at all. I would get so sick. You know your body and know what is normal. Good luck with your pregnancy.

I have to say I ate whatever I wanted -lol-and saw no ill effects with my babies. The only time I worried about spices was when I was nursing because it can upset the baby's tummy then.
I do not believe it could possibly cause blindness - sounds like an old wives' tale.
