I just painted my brick last fall.... I first sprayed it to wash it up ... then painted only a few select bricks to match the house... It worked great,,,so great that I did it to my fireplace in the house!!!
Just be sure you are getting exterior paint and all should be well... a few years down the road when you want a little change you can paint select bricks a different color for some contrast...
Happy Painting !! : )

if you paint, try spraying the bricks down with water and letting it soak in for a minute or two before you start. this way the bricks will soak up the water, rather than your first coat of paint. you should only have to do two coats.

murcuric acid is extremely costic and bad for just about everything it touches including people, pets, and wildlife/plants. don't use it... However if you are hell bent on making it look nice one option that you have is to rent a sandblaster.(a very dirty job but yeilds great results) and clean the brick with sand. in the long run you may choose not to paint. however if you don't want to tackle that particular task then wire brush the whole thing and Spray dont roll your paint you can rent a wagner for cheap... and it will give you a better look than rolling.
Good luck.

my neighbor just did his front stoop and stairs which are all brick.
he used a brick colored paint and hand painted each brick face. then he went over the lines with a white. it looks great. all he did was sweep the stoop and wash it with a hose before painting.
good luck

painting brick is kind of ugly in my opinion. plus it frequently chips and you always have to repaint it, you could put wood with a nice design or something around it to cover it, and then paint it with a nice accented color to your house, but it just depends on what the other part of the house loks like.

You could also rent a sand blaster. Just be sure to cover areas you don't want damaged with a tarp.
