This is a very important point. Even on less important issues people could do serious damage to their property if they use some of the suggestions made.
In my particular field which is leather upholstery there have been some ridiculous answers posted which could potentially ruin a very expensive item of furniture and sometimes these have been voted as best answers!! The main reason I post is to try and stop all the misinformation on the subject being perpetuated.
Maybe the experts among us should have some sort of tag that identifies them so that people know who they are dealing with.

This is a good question. If they handed out points for them, this would get a 10. It is rather sad when someone does a task once and does what they think is a good job, they believe they`re an expert. I`ve been installing windows and doors for 15 yrs. Yet a day never passes that I don`t learn something new. The smart person is one who can sift the fact from fiction. I find a good majority of these questions can be answered safely and simply. CONTACT A PROFESSIONAL!!!!!!

When it comes to repairing things, a lot of people 'think' they are experts. I'm a journeyman plumber/steamfitter, and you have no idea how many 'repairs' I've had to undo. Most of the time the repair to the repair ends up being more costly, and yes, the assumption that someone knows how to do something puts them in harms way. Many times it would have been cheaper to have called a professional in the first place.

Why do people ask on this site? They think Professional just sit around this site to hand-out information. When I answer a question I either have done it or know someone who has.

Your question is a good one. I often answer maintenance questions from my 30 years of experience in the field.
Some of the answers are frankly frightening in what they say to do. My advice to anyone asking a question is get a qualified professional to handle what you don't know how to do but use the answers to ask them better questions and give better information.

All information you read on any Yahoo! Answers forum should be taken as a personal life experience, but not as actual technical advice on how to solve a legitimate problem.

Excellent point. About all we can do is give a bogus answerer a "thumbs down" rating. If enough people do that, hopefully the asker will get the idea.

Responding to another of your answers, I have done HVAC repair for 23 years, with commercial refrigeration. Haven't worked in awhile due to two herniated disks in my back. So yes, Professionals do sit around and answer questions.

There are some people on this site who are very qualified to answer questions. Yes. Some qualified people do sit at their computers at night and offer advice to other people for free.
