A geisha is a woman who is trained in the Japanese arts to entertain both men and women, through dancing, singing, speaking, pouring drinks, playing instruments, and even games. The geisha world was established so that women could work to support themselves and larn to be independent. The geisha's salary is usually a very high one, not to mention all the tips she gets from customers (these tips are alot more than a couple of dollars). So if a geisha makes so much money, why would she resort to perform sexual favors? She doesn't need to. A geisha is free to have sex with whomever they please, no strings attached. And no, a geisha's virginity is not auctioned off. They are geisha (artists), maiko (dancers), and geiko (women of art), and occasionally the taikomachi (male geisha).

A popular view of the geisha is that they were prostitutes. Some prostitutes posed as geisha in order to attract men, but a true geisha rarely engaged in sexual relations with her customers. In fact, geisha were, first and foremost, entertainers. They went to parties, where they kept things lively, played drinking games with the men and danced or sang. A geisha’s presence was considered essential to the success of a private party. Several geisha present meant the host was a man of wealth and status.

Well I think that is a hard question to answer because of the differing views, some call a geisha basically just a hostess and then the opposite say a geisha is a japanese prostitute. I personally see a geisha as someone that is meant to make a man feel very special and is more classy that your traditional american prostitute... I find the whole system mysterious and a little more reputable.

The Japanese (is there any other kind-smile) is/was a very well trained professional female used primarily for entertaining well to do, high level men.

It is similar to Western opera star actors but much more. They were/are taught to know and serve/perform the most long established ancient tea ceremonies, dances and songs.
Although they all had the same basic training some specialized and was more talented in one area than the other. They were not all prostitutes however some where and some where forced into it. They were often sold or used or contracted by mothers for prestige but more often to pay off government or private high debts.
It is a very beautifully and demanding performances. They lived in what is called a stable. Simular to western boxers that were owned by their managers, Sumo wrestlers, whose daily life is also very hard.

Bottom line they were not all prostitutes. It became common to refer them to the prostitute trade because many of the prostitute houses used untrained or very limited trained prostitutes to play the role of Geishas.

They are a distinguished group of young women schooled exclusively in the arts, dance, performing, singing, etc.
Geishas are viewed as upper class individuals in society contrary to popular beliefs.
These women normally do not perform other favors in sexual nature due to their strict code. They (Geishas) are mainly to entertain and are to be graceful & elegant at all times.
Geishas are also well versed in current events and are capable of holding a conversation with men of any stature.
But of course in today's modern world the art of Geisha is a dying breed.
