Because some things are not worth a full dollar, and because setting prices in only whole dollars would be an economic hardship when prices have to go up. Imagine your grocery bill if every single item was rounded to the nearest dollar, then prices had to go up (because prices have to go up on pretty much everything sooner or later) and every item you bought went up by a whole dollar.

Yikes.. So our choice on Gasoline would be $1, $2, $3, or up?? Nothing in between..

It's not practical economically to go on even dollars. I can't think of any nation that does not have a monetary equivalent to our penny.

OK no problem - that will be $1 for that piece of gum- yesterday it was 5 cents

cents make sense... it's just the pennies that I think are pointless. I heard that they are actually supposed to be discontinuing them in the near future.

Good questions.

Because before the bill - our country used to trade in coin.

Instead of eradicating the coin - we kept using it along with the bill.
