Within the contest period, the asker is at liberty to decide which is the best answer. If the asker doesn't make a determination roughly 24-or-so hours after having asked the question, other people are allowed to vote on the answers.
Each person is at liberty to use his or her own opinion regarding which is the best answer, so there's technically no objective criteria. I've seen some absurdly bad -- and even false -- answers get selected as a "best answer."
For those of us contributing in good faith, a best answer concisely provides accurate essential information.
Depending on the nature of the question, some best answers can be quite brief; however, a thorough answer occasionally requires a lengthy presentation.

No such thing as "a" criteria. Criteria is the plural of criterion. Beyond that, I'm afraid your question makes no sense.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how "best answers" are selected - it's all very subjective. I had an answer picked as best just so the asker could tell me off in very crass and vulgar terms; not because he liked my answer.
Seems as tho "best answers" are as varied in quality as are the questions asked.

That is simple. Read the question and answer it to the best of your ability. I see tons of answers that will address a part of the question, or totally miss the mark. Just be genuine, take pride in what you write, and realize if you take the time to write it someone might take the time to read it. Good luck on your search.

I just think that if you address the problem posed in the question and give your best effort you have a good chance to get a best answer from the asker.....I'm fortunate enough to be at about 13% on best answers...........
