do they read them and elaborate on them to come up with a better response? Or do most of them just say the first thing that comes to mind?

Most of the time I just answer, and it irks me when I click "answer this question" and it says "be the first to answer" and then I hit submit, only to find a bunch of answers already there and somebody has given my same answer first. Makes me feel like a dork.
Sometimes I do read the answers first though, and if someone already said what I wanted to say, I just skip it and go on.

If I see that someone else has answered the question, I check the answers. If the answer(s) are similar or exactly what I was going to say, I don't say anything. If I can elaborate on the, I do. However, most of the time, when I see that nobody has answered before I start typing, a few people have already answered by the time I've finished writing my answer. For instance, the only answer you had when I started typing this was someone saying, "Hey". Now, however.....

It depends how old the question is. If you are racing to be one of the first, then your answer is probably the same as plenty of other early ones which all arrive within a few seconds of each other. But if you look at a question, say a day after it was posted, and feel you can add more to the answers so far and do a bit of supporting research then that's ultimately more satisfying to both parties.
I think the 'thumb rating' idea is meant to stop too many duplicated answers.

im just new here and dying to get to level 2, i try in rediculous vain making all kinds of things up and googling for answers. I only answer a new question and by the time i post it (over the weekend ive been doing this) there is usually a bunch of other comments I find posted already from others that I like to read because I think Im smart but usually pan out to be an idiot compared to others respondees. :)

Well I don't always read the answers but if it's something I'm unsure of then I'll read to answers to find out for sure. I have fun just reading the question and answering it with the first thing that comes to mind.

If it's a question that has only one answer (like homework help), I read to see if someone gave the correct answer yet. If they did, I don't answer. Most of the time, I just give my answer without looking at the rest.

I always read the answer before I answer because there maybe someone else who wrote the same thing that I was going to say.

As I analyze your question, it appears that you have a bit of hostility built up. Do you resent not getting a straight answer to your question? Do you not realize that many people are just trying to get to the next level. Did you realize that I just wanted to thank you for another 2 pts.
