People are tense about how people view them because it is important. I believe that succeeding in life is largely due to your ability to get other people to do what you want. If you're a student, you need your professors to pass you. If you're a businessman, you need people to buy your product. If you're a writer, you need people to publish and read your work. The list goes on. How people evaluate you has major consequences for your life. That pressure is one of the reasons why I like to have alot of time to myself. In solitude, I don't have to worry about how people view me, and I find that very relaxing.

Working backwards here...
I think people are tense because any more these days we are in a society where we have to *scrap* and compete and be ruthless and cutthroat, to higher and higher degrees, just to *tread water* and continue to put food on the table and to keep a roof over our heads. And it doesn't help matters any that in some nations, like the United States, that we have this Mass Media and this SuperStar Culture wherein folks are just attacked and totally rendered worthless in the public eye for having *any* problems at all. See any Jerry Springer lately? How about Maury? Seems like folks just can't have any problems without being attacked for it, if not on a damn talk show, then out in public when folks ride the bus to run errands....
Which at the end of the day just isn't Fair at all because the whole economics of this "competitive" society are so rigged in favor of the richest of the filthy rich anyway that it's become a Negative Sum game, not just a win-lose Zero Sum Game where every winner creates a loser, but a *Negative* Sum Game where most folks *are losers in society from BIRTH no matter WHAT they do*.
Of course, I admit to being biased. I know where I stand. I have no place in society. I've busted my hump for 30 years, since I was ten years old during my parent's divorce, sacrificing my social life and more just to get the grades, get the education, and to try to work hard, get the job and *make something of myself*.
Did it work? Nope. You people wouldn't let it work. No offense meant, but for the past 30 years, every time I've had any success at all in life, *somebody* has always shown up, either to take it away from me directly, or indirectly by pointing at my smallest mistakes and shouting, "Look, LOOK! He screwed up, He SCREWED UP, OH NO!!" :p
So yeah, I get it. I get it when folks insult me on the damn bus and at the damn mall for "stinking" when I know damn well I used soap, deodorant, toothpaste and mouthwash (often twice!) first thing in the morning....
I get it already. I have no place in society and no hope for the future no matter what I do, because you don't want me around.
I get it already. You no longer have to work so hard to insult me and put me down, ok??
I get it.

People are tense because they feel they are not at present the way they like others to view them !
This problem was not with me.

I few myself - in order of helpfulness:
in light of God's grace, my best girl's face, the look on the check out clerk's face, and the mirror. Only 2 count.
We are so tense about this because tv has us convinced out outer "self" defines the value of our inner self. It's baloney of course, but then lots of people like baloney.
You welcome - class act to thank us.

Of course it hurts me when people say things about me, or things that aren't true, but It would never make me change for anyone. I want to be loved for who I am, and I want people to see me as a person with feelings and worth.

Humans are like pack animals. Its our nature to gain support from others. When another person praises us, we feel more confident thus we feel as if we can accomplish more. The feeling of accomplishing more is like a personal 'high'.

It's because to a large degree, we base our percpetions of self and self worth upon the way others appear to evaluate us.

We all want to be accepted. I think it's a primeval thing. There is a pecking order to all species of mammals...probably for breeding and I think that's where it comes from.
