I know rain and temperature changes affect the changing leaves, but does more/less rain make the leaves brown? Do hotter/colder summers make a difference at all?

the answer is photosynthesis. the more light given the more chlorophyll is produced in the tree or plant and the leaves turn green. as the light decreases the chlorophyll levels drop and the natural colors of the tree or plant show in the leaves. example : red maple=red leaves, yellow maple=yellow leaves, sugar or honey maple= orange colored leaves. as far as temperature goes if it gets cold enough(freezes before leaves change color( like happened across the southern pen. of Michigan 11-12 years ago the leaves get frostbit, and don't change color they just die and fall off the tree/ plant). the cloudier the late summer/early spring the earlier leaf color change

If you are talking about the color changes in autumn, it is mostly due to the change in the amount of sunlight they get plus the falling temps.

The greater the temp differential between day & nightime, the more colorful the display will be. So warm days & chilly nights bring out the most colors.
