I assume you mean used books. Free new books are the province of religious and political propaganda.

Around here, used bookstores only accept certain books. Often people who have carried a heavy box to the store, only to find several are not wanted, end up putting them on the sidewalk outside the store. You might check with the bookstores if they would be willing to put a box for such unwanted books somewhere inside the store, and you will pick them up. Then do so often, as once the box is over-full, the store will start getting annoyed with it. Also, the thrift shops that sell books may get donations they consider unsuitable (too sexy for a religious group, for example), and would be willing to let you have them.

Places that have used book sales only periodically instead of year-round (such as church sales) often need to get rid of their stock after their sales are over. Check www.booksalefinder.com to find book sales near you, and then call those vendors and see if they need some help clearing out their supply. Many vendors appreciate making those kinds of arrangements even before their sales have taken place.

Try putting a request card on the bulletin board at places like Wal*Mart, the local supermarket, laundromat, etc.
Call the newspaper and ask them to write about your project and that it needs donations.
Tell all your neighbors about it. Ask at places that you are involved in (church, work, etc.).
