On your Federal income tax return your taxable income is reduced by $3,300 (for tax year 2006) for each dependent you claim, therefore reducing your tax liability. The amount that your taxes will go down depends on your tax bracket which will be determined by your total taxable income. As for the amount of tax withheld from your wages each pay period the same is true for each additional allowance you claim on your Form W-4. You will be permitted one additional allowance for each dependent you plan to claim at the end of the year. In most states the same kind of thing is true but the amounts are different.

It will go down, but not really, because it stops working for you at three dependents on the tax code curve.

Tax liability will go down because you get additional deductions as a result of adding more dependants.

If you have enough taken out of your check to compensate getting a refund, without dependents, you will almost double the amount refunded by adding them.
