The word "oral" is similar to the word "Orifice". They both are/mean opening of which there are 9 to the outside of the body. Where as orifice is in general to mean/indicate hole oral is generally associated with the mouth.

Thus the oral thermometer is designed for the mouth and has a different shaped end. The rectal one which is designed to go into the rectum or anus or the butt. The oral long narrow like shape and the rectal one is more shaped like a round bulb on the end.

They both can be used to take a temperature but generally used only the rectum or the mouth.

rectal thermometer will have a more blunt (shorter) rounded end (prevents breakage), the oral thermometer will have a longer narrow end. Temps taken in both place's vary, the rectal reading will be only slightly higher. I believe that they are trying to get mercury thermometers off the market, as mercury can be dangerous in our water system and is not deposed of properly.

After intensive search of both the thermometers and also the concerned holes, I 'cmu' at the following 4 differences. Hope you understand, amen......

Oral thermometer does not change its size.
Rectal thermometer does so on seeing the hole!

Oral thermometer does not have a temperature of its own
Rectal thermometer does become hot at times!

Mercury does not 'ooze' out in oral one.
Something 'comes' out in a rectal one!

There is no hole in the oral thermometer itself.
There is one in the rectal one!
