Federal government is a government is Federalism...the central government is strong, but also relies on state governments (all officials are voted in by the people) or regional governments (in the case of the U.S., there are state governments). The opposite of this is the unitary system. This is where there is only the central government which makes up rules and enforces them as it sees fit.

he government of the United States of America, established by the U.S. Constitution, is a federal republic of individual states. The laws of the United States are laid out in Acts of Congress (especially the United States Code and Uniform Code of Military Justice); administrative regulations, and judicial cases interpreting the statutes and regulations. The federal government has three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial. Through a system of separation of powers or "checks and balances", each of these branches has some authority to act on its own, some authority to regulate the other two branches, and has some of its authority, in turn, regulated by one or both of the other branches.

In Americas case, The federal government represents all of the people/states as oppose to the representation/laws that are passed by each state and are not applicable to any other state.
Chaos: Each state prints its own money and sets its own value.
Declares war on another nation, no redress if a state passes a law that is total contrary to the laws of all the other states.
land bound states seeking sea lanes or any type of travel to other countries.
Enough said!

It's good to have a strong federal government, however, I think that each state should have it's own individual laws and I do not feel that it is right that federal law supersedes state law.
