It is standard driver's ed to teach to pull to the right and stop. It is also standard in Emergency Vehicels Opperator's courses to teach that you always pass on the right of a vehicle unless there is no other option. I would venture a guess (from experience) that NY drivers are terrible, but not as bad as Boston drivers.
The safe thing to do is go as far right as possible and stop. If the driver of the emergency vehicle is competent they will not rear end you.

The drivers in NY should pull off the highway, but those folks know from experience, that if they do, they will be rear ended. It's a way of fast living in NY. They are always in a big hurry to get nowhere fast.

I think the general rule is that if it is possible and safe to pull over, then do so. I would assume that big city ambulance and emergency vehicle drivers are used to heavy traffic and drive accordingly.

many large cities have local laws where they are to merely stop in the lane they are in and let the police or ambulance go around them. It is that way in Atlanta GA, but most people still try and pull over.

LI is just full of drivers with road rage. Everyone is in a hurry and there is nothing but traffic. There is definitely a lack of respect. Driving here is at times scary, however, sometimes driving elsewhere in the US is even scarier!

When I lived in Fla. it was the law to pull over if not they would give you a ticket. So some states may make it mandatory by law to do so.

Why should any self-respecting Long Islander waste 10 seconds of their time just to let some sick dude get to a hospital faster?

the law is the same everywhere. Stupid people are not only limited to NY though, they are the same way everywhere, even here in Tennessee.
