A cell phone can be a good thing and it comes in handy for emergencies. If I were you I'd put some rules in place:

1) she better answer when you call or have a good reason for not answering
2) she will help contribute to the cost of it by doing all of her chores and keeping up with her school work
3) No calling or receiving calls after 10pm (or whatever time you set)
4) that the minute she abuses the use of it, you will take it away

I would get her one of those "pay as you go" cell phones so that she has to "earn" the money you put on it to buy her more minutes.

I thought I just read about a kidnap victim - a young girl that used a cell phone to call police. Maybe not. But here's a woman who did:

I would say a cell phone could save her life one day.

I'm sure it will drive you nuts if she's on it all the time, but she's a kid in the year 2006. Let her have it. :) Then you can use your own phone more lol.

This is a tricky question. She may not be to young to use a cell phone or borrow one. I would say don't give her one for 24/7 use. Give her the phone only certain times when she's out somewhere or may need to use it. Let her show you that she is responsible enough to use it for the time you allow her to have it. Make sure she doesn't go over the limit you set for her and then maybe allow her to have more use of it later.

What we did was we gave her an older cell phone and told her if she could show us she cant go over her minutes and run the bill up that we would give her a new cell phone. and then when she gets it if she shows us that she cant go over the minutes she will get text msgs. ect...

I would. However, You had better get a go phone from cingular. It would be totally prepaid so dont worry about outrageous bills. If you want, you could make her pay for reflls to her account so she knows that she can't just use it to talk 24/7. This would allow her to learn the value of a dollar and how to budget her talk time. Pick between 2 plans. Just go to the site to learn more.

Well all depends on whether she goes out a lot or not. You might need to keep in touch, know her wearabouts, be able to contact her in case you have important information to pass on...
Besides, you can also monitor her phone calls so that she doesn't abuse of it to communicate with her friends all day!

There is however a new phone for young children that can only call a few numbers... In case you're interested... But I think it'll show a lack of faith in her.

Lady, if you have to ask a bunch of strangers on Yahoo this question, you are in BIG trouble. Who will be paying for this phone? YOU! That shoul dprovide you a start, dear. I suppose in a couple of years you will be asking if your daughter is too young for a car. Geesh!

i'm old school i guess. i don't understand why teenagers need cell phones at that young of an age. don't they see their friends enough in school and at school functions. why do they need a phone? what is so important that is going on in their life that they need a cell phone? it's a load of crap if you ask me, but that's just my opinion. there's just no need for it until they're old enough to pay for it 100% on their own if they feel they need one.

Get her a cell phone... not for her, but for YOU... you can always reach her... but like everything else with kids, you need to place limits. It will help toteach her some responsibility... managing her minutes and stuff.... I got my 14 year old one... and it's been great!
