Well, you could compare in several dictionaries, but maybe three were wrong and only one right, so . . .
Or, you could do as Merriam Webster intended, and define the correct spelling as that which is in the dictionary. In other words, even if it was originally a typo, the fact that it is published in the dictionary that way MAKES it correct.

Well, I thought dictionary is always correct but it's not. I usually like to look up for words at yahoo dictionary b/c I only type the word I want and "click" there you go, instead of go over pages and the alphabets order.

I can not remember where I seen it, but there are a good many misspelled words in the dictionary. I would know because I know how to spell.

I am sure dictionaries go through spell checks many many times before they get printed and shipped off. But, who's to know? But I'd hope my knowledge could help me think whether a word is spelled wrong or not, I'd figure it out eventually.

One assumes that if it's in the dictionary it's spelled correctly, but in this day and age, who knows? Try looking it up in a different dictionary.
