Finally!!
a legitimate question about smoking thats not a tirade about how stupid i am for smoking.
I have been smoking cigarettes for 26yrs.
in the past few years i have wished i never started smoking.
i remember when i was a teen i said to myself...i won't smoke when theres no one around..only outside with my friends....
then i said i would quit when it went to $1.00 a pack...they were.58 cents when i started.
i started when i was 15 and now i'm 41...i have a horrible cough that i cant get rid of....i run out of breath walking down the street...
i used to have an awesome singing voice when i was younger..i used to play guitar and sing in a band....now...if i can sing a song without losing my breath and coughing my brains out i'm happy.
within 5 minutes after i wake up my body needs nicotine.
i do curse the day i began and it makes me sad to see young people smoke...i dont say anything because i know they wont listen...i didnt.
thank you for asking your question without preaching and making me feel like an outcast because i smoke like so many people do.
they don't understand that many of us especially the ones who have been smoking for many years regret starting and we don't need anyone telling us what we are doing to ourselves..we know the score already.

I have smoked for 25 year and have a raspy voice and, compared to my siblings, have leathery and wrinkled skin. I aslo suffer from allergies galore and have a terrible cough. Why haven't I quit? I'm addicted and have tried. Please don't start or if you have, try to quit.
I have lost 4 family members to cigarette smoking and am currently trying to quit...permanently myself.
My father-in-law is using Albuterol inhalers, on oxygen and has emphazema. He has been in the hospital for just over a month and a half and was sent home because he was told that there was nothing more they could do for him.
One of his lungs has colapsed 5 times and if if happens again, they (Doctors) cannot help him. He is on oxygen but even with that he can't live with just one lung....
HE HASN'T SMOKED FOR 5 YEARS...In some cases, once the damage is done, there is simply no help.
Yes, I still want my nicotine fix but I only hope that I can get past that and be with my family longer than if I continue to smoke.
Good luck...

45 years smoking. I have a cough, but not always, and a tendency towards bronchitis if I get a cold. My lungs are totally healthy, but bronchial tubes are fried -- no cilia to move the mucus out so that is why I cough.
I also have heart disease (quad bypass last year at 53), but plaque buildup can be caused by many things, not the least of which is heredity and being obese most of my life. I needed the surgery AFTER I lost 125 lbs, not before.
I had high blood pressure at age 10, so cigarettes didn't do that....
Not that they are healthy for you, but I dont think they have done much of anything to my health. Pollution when I lived in the city bothered me much more, and once I moved to Maine those problems disappeared (like my asthma for instance). Worst effect is on my finances

Just quit a few weeks ago after a few years of smoking around 1 pack a day. Cough is just now going away. No other symptoms left. Occasional desire to smoke, but not strong enough to break my commitment to myself. What commitment, you ask? To my two boys to live a long time and myself to stop wasting money. I got DSL, HDTV, satellite, and cellphone with the $150.00/month or so that I'm saving.
