The winds were 25 to 40 mph last week and they blew over two crane towers that were being used to construct a bridge over the canyon south of Hoover Dam. There was quite a bit of danger due to all kinds of electrical lines that came down onto the roadway.

I checked at a Hoover Dam (not damn) site that said a tower crane fell over on Friday, closing the road in both directions. The road is now re-opened, as of Monday night 8pm.

If it is closed to tourists, it is usually because of some kind of security risk. That happens with a fair degree of regularity. If terrorists take out Hoover Dam, the whole west coast is largely without electricity.
