The position of Medical Billing and Coding is very important to all areas of medical and dental offices, surgery centers, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, laboratory and radiology centers, etc. The list really goes endless with possibilities. This is a critical position as this person is responsible for correctly coding all services and items for the patient's date of service for submission to an insurance, medicare, medicaid programs for payment. If correct information is not submitted the payment is delayed and that is why this person is so essential in the office they can delay the money or get it in time! Most professionals in this field are now working from home offices or are an independent contractor with their own business providing this service to the medical/dental providers in their community. Word of advice: do not just go for a certification, it's usually only a matter of few additional months to obtain a degree, do it! The difference in earnings' is thousands of dollars. And most degree programs get into business classes also! Each medical procedure has a number/letter code for insurance purposes. Coders figure out what it is so they can send claims to the insurance company, and the doctor can get paid. Personally, it sounds really boring to me. The only time people would contact you is if you did something wrong.
