A mathematician does not need to go into chemistry along with his or her mathematics major. (S)he can also become a math teacher. It is well known that teachers can change students lives. One person's guidance or confidence can change someone's life. It can be thankless, but the number of children who go on to succeed, whether it is the sciences or the arts, can astound.
Another good use for being a mathematician would be working with tunnels. By using math skills, a mathematician could figure out the faults of a tunnel without ever building it.
You can protect the country against an attack by discovering cryptology, which is diciphering secret codes, which can be debunked on a mathematical basis. You could not change the world, but prevent it from changing. And that is no small change.
You can also do research. And with research, who knows what could happen. Figure out a new equation or anything that you conjure up.
Then there is operations research, which is a prime cousin of mathematics. Math is used to help the Army or Navy defeat the enemy. Build a strategy.
You can also ask a professor who is a mathematician as to what you can do. They will gladly tell you.
