I am curious because I know a couple of HR managers and they say those salaries are no were near the actual levels of pay? If so then how do I find out what the median salary is for an Application Engineer in the Auto Industry in the Metro Detroit area?

Those salaries are very average. For us up north where $50,000 isn't a big deal, down south it might be considered well to do. I believe asking actual people who work in that area is the best bet.

http://www.dol.gov/dol/siteindex.html

US Department of Labor website. A-Z search at the top of the page. Search for salary info. Much more accurate than salary.com that thought I should have been making $20k more/year at each of my last 3 jobs.
