the oktoberfest (no umlaut there, monkeybomb) originated in munich, where it is still held every year in september - for the simple reason that the weather is usually nicer then. the first oktoberfest was held by crownprince ludwig of bavaria (later king ludwig I) to celebrate his wedding to therese von sachsen-hildburghausen, on october 12th, 1810. it was basically a huge party, encompassing a horse race. after that event, the place where the oktoberfest is held is called the theresienwiese (theresa's meadow), and munich natives will not talk about the oktoberfest, but the "wies'n", bavarian dialect for meadow. the fest has since become the largest fair on this planet, with six million people attending last year. nowadays it is essentially an excuse to get drunk and have a good time (the fairground rides are spectacular), but it also has significant impact on munich's tourism revenue. oktoberfest clones held in the us and canada seem to be mostly about getting drunk, too, and are kind of funny to germans because no caterer in their right mind on a german fair would serve beer in pitchers and expect people to drink it from plastic cups. ;-)

It's ONLY about getting VERY VERY VERY DRUNK. If you ever go to the real thing in Munich, Germany and actually see it there you won't believe it. And this year it started Sept 16th and will go on 24/7 till Oct. 3rd. Two extra days because of a holiday!

Unbelievable.
