I don't really need it for anything I just think that it would be cool to have. Also can anyone tell me what SI unit it uses.

Before you go anywhere else try eBay. Theres always a ton of Geiger counters for sale at good prices.

Typically Geiger counts measure the radiation levels in rem. These units take into account not only the number of disintegrations but also their energy and biological impact. Also Geiger counters can't detect neutrons.

My daughter went on a student exchange to Russia in 1994. There was a watch on the market that had a geiger counter in it. I tried without success to get one for her so she could check radiation levels where she was living. They cost about US$200. A Becquerel is one atomic disintegration per second. Geiger counters are sensitive enough to detect radiation levels as low as this. If you can find the tube or semiconducting sensor that detects the rediation, you could probably build the circuit yourself; it's not very complicated. Check it out with Google.

i think id get paranoid though and start checking the radiation levels of everything
