Because there were so many ranked teams playing each other. The meaning is that these games would seperate the legitimately good teams who may have a shot at the national championship, from those who may be over-rated, or just not there yet. 7 games involving teams ranked in the top 25- the most in 13 years.

It was just a marketing tool used to build extra interest in college football for the weekend.
A lot of highly ranked teams played each other, so we were supposed to see which teams are contenders and which are pretenders.
Unfortunately, it really did nothing to separate the players from the posers because the season is so young. If this many ranked teams would have played each other in week 8 or later, it actually would have been "Separation Saturday"
Even though Notre Dame got killed by Michigan, they still have a chance to play for the championship if they win the rest of their games.

becuase there were seven games between members of the top 25, and so it starts to seperate the true title contenders from those who were just taking advantage of a weak schedule

It separated a lot of the undefeated teams. I think between 10-15 teams that were previously undefeated lost.
