The success of every career is directly affected by your level of passion for your craft. I know many lawyers that barely make a living wage. They faked their way through law school, passed the bar by the skin of their teeth, and then dred going into work every day. I also know many software engineers who lied on their resume to get the job and now they go to work and flim-flam around for a week or so until the boss discovers that they really don't know what they are doing- and then they go on to the next job.

So to make a simpler explanation, Either career can have a greater earning potential than the other.

It's possible, but not for the majority.

Some soft. engineers can pull $110k, whereas some lawyers can be under $100k in an averaged sized metro area. It's not the typical case though. Even within the field of law, lawyers can vary based on what they do. Lawyers can get a boost if they have their own practice, build a name, and charge premium rates.
