When watching the NFL I noticed that some of the referees have some sort of string wrapped around thier wrist and then between their ring and pointer fingers. What is that for? I thought it was thier whistle, but you can clearly see thier whistle hanging around thier neck.

The strings and the fingers are used to keep track of the downs.

For example, a string in between the index and middle fingers is 1st down.

A string in between the middle and ring fingers is 2nd down.

A string in between the ring and pinky fingers is 3rd down.

A string in between the thumb and index finger and around the hand is 4th down.

Those are the strings that hook the puppett referees to NFL headquarters.
