St. Patrick's Day was meant as a celebration of the life and work of St. Patrick. Wearing green is simply an association with the green of Ireland. While I agree that people have unfortunately turned it into just another day to get drunk and have parades I do like the tradition that has started in the past few years in my home town of Wauconda. There is a local bar owner who started the tradition of getting his patrons, Irish or not, to shave their heads in solidarity with chemotherapy patients. As I understand it if they make a donation to a local cancer hospital then he covers the cost of the haircut and gives them a free drink. I think that is a tradition that St. Patrick would approve of.

St. Patrick Day probably isn't actually a lucky day, at all, for anyone. I'm Irish and I have the worst luck, and Paddy's Day is just another stupid parade.

Ok. Here's the deal --- the green represents the country of Ireland. The green is suppose to be the luxicous color of Ireland's countryside --- remember --- Ireland is an Island. Now, the luck is tales from the "wee people". If you don't believe, I'm sorry for you. The luck of the Irish, well, if you're lucky enough to be Irish, you'll know what I mean. ....So I hope this helps, my pooka wants me !!

the wearing of the green dates far past st. Patrick..in ancient Ireland the first people where called the fir bolg or the bag men, they where conquered by a light skinned fair hair people called the tuath dedanna or children of the goddess dannu the tuath dedanna in an attempt to humble the fir bolg who they found to be an impposibly proud group, made them wear green clothes.green being the most common and therefore humble color there was.the fir bolg however turned the wearing of the green into a proud sign of their ethnic heritage and to this day it remains a sign of pride and defiance in the face of adversity.

yes. green is for our land, the "Emerald Isle" as it were. and it is lucky for the non-Irish because we Irish will it to be out of our infinite generosity. but just remember, if you're lucky enough to be Irish, you're lucky enough.
