Don't kid yourself, Stephanie, it's not for either reason.
The government pretty much controls the distribution and sale of alcohol - marijuana wouldn't be any more difficult to control.
The government would not lose money - it would realize huge savings in abolishing the war on drugs and extra income by taxing it.
That being said, why wouldn't society want to legalize it?
Simple. Because a small portion of our population cause a hugely disproportional amount of serious problems because they can't even use alcohol responsibly - crime, antisocial behavior, domestic unrest, deaths and destruction by DUI, and so forth.
Would you really want to throw another log on this fire?

If the government got involved in the legalized marijuana then the prices would go up age limits would be enforced and they would probably spray it with a 101 chemical. You wouldn't even be able to find it on the street.

I agree with fathead. Let me point out that I am not a drug using kid, I am 64 years old, and have never been drunk or stoned in my life. I live along the border, and it is dangerous here because of the war on drugs. We went through this with alcohol in the 20's, and it seems we are too stupid to learn anything. In my opinion we kill a lot more people with the War on Drugs and the resulting turf wars than drugs ever kill.
Twice, once in 1894, and once in the 20's, studies showed that people were better off on marijuana than on booze. There is something disgusting about a cop beer party to celebrate a major pot arrest.

Lose money? It would make the government millions in taxes! It does seem rather strange that it would be illegal while alcohol is legal and a great source of revenue.
The best thing about making it legal is that it would quickly remove the high profit margin and put many criminals out of business. Same goes for every other illegal drug.

First you have to go read the story on why it became illegal in the first place. It was big business like DuPont that pressured the Government to ban all hemp products due to competition for the products they were making.
Its still illegal because old habits die hard and the old farts who first made it illegal are still influencing the Governments decisions today. but look at how rich Al Capone became when alcohol was made illegal same is the case for pot.
