First, what sort of monitor is this? Is it an older 15 inch or a newer 17 inch or greater? Also, what sort of graphics card do you have? most should be able to use resolutions of 1240x1020 at least.
If your monitor or video card is old, you're out of luck. Sorry.
However if you just did a driver upgrade and all of a sudden your colors are weird and your screen is tiny, you've messed up the driver for your video card. No biggie, just uninstall the driver and reinstall the older one. Most windows operating systems also allow you to 'roll back' drivers to an earlier version installed before you went and botched things up.
To fix that, right-click the My Computer icon and select 'properties'. Click the 'Hardware' tab in the window that comes up. Click 'device manager' and find your video card in the list. Double click it and select 'driver'. Click 'roll back driver' and all should be well.

reinstall you sound and video drivers ,as it sounds like they are corrupt
you can check this this by right clicking my computer > properties > hardware tab then device manager > sound video and games controllers . if there is a problem it will show here as a "?" in a red / green circle

You will probably have to get a screen that has a higher resolution.
