Why did strings enter the world of theories?
Because once special relativity was on firm observational and theoretical footing, it was appreciated that the Schrödinger equation of quantum mechanics was not Lorentz invariant, therefore quantum mechanics as it was so successfully developed in the 1920s was not a reliable description of nature when the system contained particles that would move at or near the speed of light. Ha Ha Ha!

personally i try to forget the dumb jokes that don't make me laugh. but one bad one that i can think of is one of those older relative type jokes. a man holds out his arm and says "I once used my arm to catch a fish this big!" it's slightly funny because usually you see people with both arms up saying i caught a fish this big!"
