Sublimation refers to the defense mechanism in psychoanalytic theory in which a repressed thought or emotion is diverted to a more acceptable channel or form of expression. An example of this is when aggression is sublimated to play in sports.

sublimation is information that is supposed to be imbedded in something that has nothing to do with that specific information. for e.g. back in the 40s or 50s, they had pictures of popcorn and soda in the background of the movie. according to freud, we unconsciously perceive these images and thus make us want to get popcorn and soda while watching movies. then of course, research shows that sublimation have nothing to do with anything.
