It's rock music. Indie refers to Independant, meaning they aren't major or on a large record lable. Same with indie movies. The budget usually comes right from the bands pocket. Indie rock is like normal rock.

It's a band that comes from the West Indies. Or sometimes Indiana. :) OK, but seriously folks...it means Independent, but also, it can be many different kinds of music, but relating it back to some semblance of Rock and roll.

one that doesnt have all of the opportunities in the world, and starts really small, making their own cds and producing their own stuff. its just another category to put bands that dont have major corporate sponsors at the beginning. the music is just like any other rock music.
