It's gonna be gross but usually a shower drain is clogged with hair and gunk trapped just below the drain. Simply remove and hardware on the drain and scoop out the crud. When your done gagging, put the cover back on and take a shower.

How To Fix Shower Drain

The best practice is to use a snake, a 25' snake can be purchased at your local Ace, or in the plumbing dept of any building center. Purchase the kind that has a way to rotate.

remove the screen, begin feeding the snake down into the drain, turning it as you push down.. Once you feel like you hit a blockage turn some more, and stop pushing for a bit, you may want to pull out and throw any accumulation on the cork screw end. then refeed it down the line. once the snake goes down fairly freely in all likelihood you've solve your problem..

Most drain cleaning chemicals are extremely hazardous and should be used with caution, gloves, eye protection, etc.. I've had best results with plain old Red Devil Lye. Two Tablespoons into the drain. Let it sit for a few minutes that flush with water repeat until clog is gone.

I like Ash's answer. You might want to periodically flush your drains by putting baking soda and white vinegar in them and then rinsing with warm water. You'll need a large quantity, that you can find at a warehouse grocery like BJs or Sam's Club. When baking soda and white vinegar are mixed together, they start to fizz and churn in the drain. These two products are harmless to you, the plumbing and environment. Hope you get the drain open. It's pretty nasty to do, that's for sure. If the coat hanger doesn't work, you'll need to get a snake. It's a thick wire like thing that reels in and out on a coil. When you put it in the drain and turn the handle, the wire rotates to loosen the clog.

hi, drano and clog openers you buy at a supermarket are not strong enough to do the job. if the clothes hanger doesnt work go to your hardware store and buy some professional strength drain opener, rooto if available, but do not use it if the drain is completely stopped up and be sure not to get any of it on anything as it is very strong and will burn, follow the directions on the bottle and if that doesnt work wait a day or so and rent a drain opener on a drill from your local rental shop if one is available and take off the coverplate and feed it in slowly as you run the drill, hope you get it open.

Use a commercial drain cleaner that is Sulfuric Acid. (read the label) It eats right through hair. It wont take much, just a couple of glugs, and wait for it to work. Open the window and close the bathroom door if possible. It stinks something terrible, but it works. Wear safety goggles and gloves if you have them, otherwise a pair of sun glasses. Once the drain is cleared run some more water down to remove the residue.

Try the mechanical idea first (coat hanger, snake) try to avoid chemicals, they will eat through your pipes. Prevention is always the best. Treat you drains with a quart of bleach or the vinegar/soda solution once a month. And get a cheap rubber secondary strainer for your shower.

Bail the xtra water out. Put duct tape over the vent (usually under the drain open/close lever). Plunge with the plunger alot. Then try dumping 1/2 box of baking soda, then 1 or 2 cups of vinegar and plunge right away. If that doesn't work, go out for drano, and pour it in and let it sit for 1/2 hour . plunge.

Try using Red Devil Lye. But be careful because it is very poisonous. Also make sure that you run cold water down the drain for a few minutes BEFORE you dump the lye down the drain. Follow the directions carefully and always use rubber gloves and keep it away from your face. IT IS VERY TOXIC.
