Its an algebra problem.
Step #1
M = 1
Because in these problems the letters are unique digits and the sum of 2 unique digits can't be more than 17 (18 if you count a carried digit 9+8+1)
Step #2
D+E = Y || D+E = Y-10
N+R = E || N+R+1 = E || N+R-10 = E|| N+R-9=E
E+O = N || E+O+1 = N || E+O-10 = N|| E+O-9 = N
S-11=O || S-10=O
Step #3
Solve the above problems algebraicly eliminating solutions that require 2 letters to be identical.
You didn't qualify this question by saying that the letters represented unique digits. Otherwise all of the letters could equal 0.
