I've always wondered about this. Anyone know?

The answers regarding a lack of melanin makes sense; however, I thought the entirity of the skin contained melanin. I tried to do a little further research on the matter but couldn't find anything about variation in color on individual's skin. Does anyone have relevant links or books I can reference?

By the way, I'm not asking this question to be rude or racist. I just want to know why the skin tone is different in those areas.

I'm not sure if you still want an answer, but the sun touches the palms of the hands less then the rest of the skin, so it's much more lighter.

And everyone has Melanin, how dark one is all depends on how much your body is making. Those who live in hotter regions make more than those in colder regions and that genetic make up passes down as well.

This has to be an evolutionary trait where the melanin protection of dark skin had no value in these areas. Bear in mind, armpits do get exposed to sunlight when, for example, picking berries off trees, sleeping during the daytime an so on.

In all races, the palms and the soles of the feet lack pigment.

It is just easier to tell in black people, but if you look at others of color (even tan white people), you can see it.

They have no pigment on their palms and bottoms of their feet. So do white people.

the sun does not see it all the time that's why. Those are the shaded areas... the colors of the world is not flat. It has shades. Just like what you see in paintings. Its always dependent on the source of light and the direction it is hitting.

I'm white and the pigment on my hands and feet are even whiter.

If they walked on their hands they'd probably have dark bottoms of feet, I think it is the sun, or maybe they have less melanin in those parts.

This is almost as silly a question as I was once (way back in the mid-1960s) asked by a clueless white woman: Why do colored people have two-toned feet?
