Depends on your team's formation - i.e. number of forwards, midfielders, and defenders. On my team it was 2-4-3-1-1; in other words - we had two strikers, four midfielders, three defenders, one sweeper, and a goalie.

*** Forwards are synonymous with attackers and strikers - they are the ones in the row nearest to the opponents' goal. Center forwards are usually one person designated to always be in the position to score goals.

*** Midfielders - obviously play in the middle of the field; they pretty much control the play of the game by maintaining possession of the ball, feeding the ball from defenders to forwards, and striping the ball from opponents. They get involved in everything, from attacking the opponents' goal to defending their own goal. In this position, you will also hear the term 'winger', who is a midfielder that plays on the outside flanks (closest to the touchline).

*** Defenders - responsible for supporting the goalkeeper and preventing goals. Terms include fullback, wingback, centreback, and sweeper. Sweepers usually play just in front of the goalie and is primarily a defensive position, but sweepers also may get involved in counter-attacks

*** Goalie - obviously, last line of defense

In conjuction with the positions, whether forward, mid, or defense, left, right and mid are thrown into it, designated which side of the field you play. A right-winger plays on the rightside of the pitch in midfield. A centreback plays in the center in the back row of the defense.

Hope that helps.

god, do you really play such old fashioned football in the us? in modern european and latin american football the positions are:

goalie
right wing defender
right central defender
left central defender
left wing defender
right wing midfielder
right central midfielder
left central midfielder
left wing midfielder
right striker
left striker

that system is known as 4-4-2. the 3-1-3-3 system as suggested here so often went obsolete in the mid nineties. if that's the way you play the game in the us it's no wonder you never win a coconut in international tournaments.
