Personally tell the person you're sorry for making a thoughtless comment. By telephone or personal visit.

Well, make sure that nobody's around listening, not because you don't want anyone else to hear, but because it's between you two and if it really hurt the person you're apologizing to then you should make it personal. then just say something to the effect of : ''look, i know when i said it was really hurtful. i'm really sorry i said it and admit it was thoughtless. i just wanted to apologize so i hope you can forgive me..." et cetera.

You just tell them. The fact that you have enough balls to tell them that you are sorry that is enough to make them respect you again. This is what you should say:
(Insert name), I just want to say that I am sorry for the (insert thoughless comment) before. I apologize, I didn't mean what I said, and that was very thoughtless of me. I like you and/or I care about you and I never meant to hurt you if I did. Friends again?

You say to them "Hey, I made a comment earlier that was completely out of line and it offended you. I should not have done that, especially in front of everyone, and I was wrong". Then leave it at that. NEVER NEVER NEVER say "I'm sorry" becuase even though you truly are, those words are cheap and over used. Everbody says they're sorry, but how many people ever admit they were wrong? That, my friend, shows character. And, you say it in front of the people that were present at the time. After all, you embarrassed him/her in front of those people, so you should make it right in front of those people.

I look them in the eye and acknowledge that my thoughtlessness hurt them and ask for their forgiveness.
It's something people really should do, take responsibility for their own actions and choices.
And maybe the hardest thing, being honest with ourselves.

You just simply say, I'm sorry if what I said, offended you, but, if its an area where one may need a helpful comment, it shouldnt be taken offensively. Thats the nice thing about the human race, none of us are perfect, but, we learn from each other, and help each other in our daily walks....
Just to let you know, I enjoy your questions!
