I hate to tell you this, but that is the definition of adolescence. I've worked with juveniles for over 20 years. If you want to take back authority, you grow a backbone. No one outside your family can give your son the tools he needs to be successful in this world. Pray for strength during this testing period. Then be strong. You are the one who knows what he loves the most. If it is TV, I have had strong parents cut the cord of the TV sets. If it is music, they have put the cd players, etc, in the trunks of their cars or donated them to charities. If it is a girlfriend....that's a toughie. Take away whatever tangible item he loves most. You can't take a person away or you risk a very depressed child. Be prepared when you take away the item(s) for him to say "That doesn't bother me!" He will rebel, walk out, run away, and refuse to work. In my own home I instituted "mom day". If they really pushed my last button they did my chores on a weekend and I sat (yes on my hands because I really didn't like the way they did them!) and read a book while they worked their fingers to the bone. It only took two and then 'mom day' was legendary for the rest of the kids. Good luck. Don't give up. You have a teenager, his job is to separate from you. You have to give him the tools to do it successfully and with a way to come back. Please let me know how this works out and don't expect an overnight miracle.

I don't know if this would be right for everybody, but my neighbor's son was just like that, so they one night they just kicked him out. He was back three days later, having tried to bunk up with some friends and realizing that it was not the best situation. He's a lot better now. If you live in a relatively safe area, it could work.

I'd talk to hhs and tell them you can't control him and are worried about the direction of his life and ask for help; sounds like he needs military school, boot camp, a group home, or something. Good Luck. God Bless.

I'm not psychologist, but I think you need to start showing some love to your son. I don't know if you realize, but once he leaves, he'll just start pushing you out of his life. You may grow old seeing your grandkids once, or missing his wedding, or something like that; personally, I'd hate that.
You need to show him that you generally care about him, that he's not some piece of scum you don't want to deal with. He doesn't listen to you because he doesn't respect you, show him you care about him and he may see the light.

He's almost 18, so just deal with it until then and then tell him that he needs to move out and live on his own. In the meantime, don't give him money, pay for his car, etc - unless he's willing to compromise then don't budge an inch.

KICK HIS BURRO! (What's the deal?) Children only do what parents allow, and it's up to you to do whatever it takes to control it. He's not uncontrollable.
