Usually when I read historical romance novels, the beautiful English lass falls in love with the great, goergeous, dangerous and masculine hero, and always the man is from Scotland or Ireland, Are men there really that beautiful?

I think the historically the irish and scots were more tribal, and therefore more rugged.
The kind of leading man in romance novels (I imagine, I don't actually read them) is very much the man's man - macho, masculine. Rough-edged. The Irish / Scots stereotype of the highlander very much fits in with that, as compared to the sedate English gentility usually portrayed in these novels.

Being a Scotsman myself I don't think I'm gorgeous or handsome. I think these novels play on the stereotypical rugged Scottish or Irish farmer, with the shovel hands and biceps built from years of throwing sheep around. There are people like that everywhere though, best to let your mind roam, think what you like knowing the picture in your mind is for your fantasy alone ;)
