It could be in the fifties or it could be snowing or below freezing. Bring clothes that you can layer, that way if it's cold, you can wear several layers, and if it's not, then you won't have to put on so many. Fifties may seem cold to you, depending on what you are used to. Socks and a hat are extremely important. Have fun, Chicago is a cool place to visit!

Dress in layers! You can be freezing outside and then boiling hot & sweaty when you step indoors.
I would stick with nice pants, cute shoes that are not too impractical (and that you wouldn't be heartbroken over if they were ruined.)
Wear twinsets or layer a turtleneck under a sweater so you can take the sweater off it you get too hot. Bring along a big cashmere wrap, there may be days you can wear it in lieu of a jacket and other days that you will need it on top of sweater, etc. Opaque tights always look great if you want to wear a skirt.
The difference between indoors and outdoor is quite drastic, and even between builings it aries.
Bring along a lot of lip balm if you tend to lose yours. Also pack a face cream (a lotion may not provide enough of a moisture barrier. The indoor heating will dry your skin out terribly You can ususally ask teh hotel concierge for a humidifier.
Have a wonderful and warm trip!

Yeah the best thing to do like everyone said is dress in layers. That’s why we love Chicago we don't know what the weather will be like. Today is 62° but for all we know tomorrow could be 80. Just bring layers, it will be cold but we just don't know how cold it may be.
Also you may want to bring something to cover your ears and hands. When its cold here and the wind is blowing...YIKES! I rather be overly prepared then not, and freeze your extremities off!

As you said, it does vary from day to day, or even minute to minute. But, I would say it gets a bit chilly at that time of year. I think a nice warm jacket would do the trick, and of course layer up just in case it gets warm throughout the day.

It's cold! 30s to 60s, and bring layers to strip off if needed - spent Thanksgiving there shopping 2 times - once it was about 20 degrees and snowing, next time it was cool & crisp upper 60s, just perfect. You never know.
