I am looking for a recommendation for my next sci-fi read. My favorite authors include Orson Scott Card and Vernor Vinge. I prefer books of the series nature but a strong stand-alone story will work also. So if you have a recommendation for these tastes please let me know! Thanks!

Sorry, if your not familiar with the authors I noted. I tend to lean towards the hard science genre vs the fantasy side. :)

There are tonnes of books written by this special lady I hope if you choose to read some or all of these I have mentioned that you might read her other stories. There is another favourite I have. I am partial to her B&B's Brain and brawn ships. You will read some about them in the Crystal singer series but The ship who sang was about the ship everyone idolised, Helva. It is an individual title but well worth a look so you can appreciate the mentions in the Crystal singer series.
I hope sincerely that you read Anne McCaffrey. For a complete anthology of what she has published visit her site.

My suggestion would be The Books Of The New Sun by Gene Wolfe. There are 4 voulmes. The Shadow of the Torturer The Claw of the Conciliator The Sword of the Lictor The Citadel of the Autarch. There was a fifth book, The Urth of the New Sun, but it is merely an add on and not really necessary. These lean a little bit towards fantasy, but they are well written and very dark and include many things you find in ordinary sci-fi.

Terry Pratchett is more fantasy, but still kicks butt. I just pick up two of his books today... The Dark Side Of The Sun, and Hogfather.
If you want a good Sci-fi, I would suggest...
*Map Of Bones, by James Rollins, (I gather his other books are good too, but haven't read any other books of his yet).
Robert J. Sawyer has some good works.
Of course there are classics, like Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and Starwars.
There are also the Firefly books. I have not read any, or picked any up, but I REALLY liked the show, so the books should be better.
*James Rollins is listed as plain fiction, but he weaves science, and technology into his stories.*
CyberNara
